Fall is in the air and you can enjoy a wide array of events in the Hamilton area this Saturday and Sunday. With a chance of showers on Saturday, be sure to bring a raincoat and umbrella while you’re out and about.
The Fall Garden and Mum Show gets underway this weekend. You can also take in a benefit concert, the Hamilton Film Festival or a fall food event. Here’s a glimpse of what’s on deck.
Fall Garden and Mum Show
The annual Fall Garden and Mum Show opens this weekend and continues through Oct. 29 at the Gage Park Greenhouse, 42 Lawrence Rd., Hamilton.
The show features 100,000 blooms and over 200 varieties of chrysanthemums. Guests can browse a vendor marketplace and enjoy entertainment or light refreshments at an in-house café. Games, crafts and activities are also available for families.
Mum Show hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.hamilton.ca/mumshow.
Hamilton Cemetery tours
“The Stories in the Stones” free Hamilton Cemetery tours by Robin McKee continue Oct. 21 with a past mayors tour at 777 York Blvd. Dress warmly and take part in a lively informative tour of Hamilton Cemetery. No reservations are necessary. See hamiltonhistory.ca for more details.
The Fall Bump, Baby and Toddler Pop-up returns to the Ancaster Fairgrounds Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ancaster Fairgrounds concession building, 630 Trinity Rd. S. Browse a selection of vendors with 60 top brands and services related to pregnancy, prenatal care, and parenting.
Fall concert
West Flamboro Presbyterian Church, 262 Middletown Rd., presents a fall concert Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. with the Burlington Welsh Male Chorus and Hope Schneider, an accomplished local soprano. The chorus will sing a variety of Welsh and English tunes. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by contacting Bruce at 905-627-5368 or email: bruce.davey3@sympatico.ca.
Duff’s Presbyterian Church at 319 Brock Rd. hosts a Fall Bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 21, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Shop the bake and deli tables and browse stitchery and crafts, a country store, Grandma’s closet and kids tables. Take-out lunches available with homemade soup, sandwiches and pie.
Namaste Hamilton! Free Yoga at Gage Park continues Oct. 21, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 1000 Main St. E. Join Deborah Devine for a free one-hour class. All ages and abilities are welcome, including kids.
Odds Bar, at 164 James St. S., is hosting a food drive for Mission Services’ Food Centre on the Odds Patio (inside Odds if raining), with a kids and adults pumpkin carving contest, $1 hot dogs, and a specialty fall cocktail. Peanut-free school snacks, pasta sauce, and peanut butter are on their wish list, but all healthy, non-perishable items will be accepted. The event is Saturday, Oct. 21, from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Laidlaw United Church, 155 Ottawa St. N., hosts a benefit concert for Hamilton non-profit organization Wesley on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. The concert includes five seasoned veterans of the Hamilton music scene. Dundas musician Don Oakie and keyboardist Lily Sazz (Groove Corporation, Cootes Paradise) entertain in the second half of the concert. Admission is $10 or pay what you can.
Hamilton Film Festival – The Martini Shot
The Hamilton Film Festival opens Oct. 21 at the Ancaster Memorial Arts Centre, with “The Martini Shot,” an existential drama that follows an ailing movie director as he begins to shoot what he believes to be his final work of art. What starts out as a work of art, ends up being an exploration of mortality and one’s profound effect on the world. The film stars Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), John Cleese (Monty Python), Derek Jacobi (Gladiator). The screening begins at 2 p.m. at 357 Wilson St. E. Tickets are $10. Come hungry and bring your foodie friends as you sample, sip and shop gluten-free goodness from 50 vendors all under one roof. There’s something for everyone from hot sauces to butter tarts and everything in between. The event is Sunday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ancaster Fairgrounds, 630 Trinity Rd. S. Admission is $8 with children 12 and under admitted free.
The Ancaster Toy and Collectibles Expo returns to Marritt Hall at the Ancaster Fairgrounds, 630 Trinity Rd. S., on Sunday, Oct. 22. Browse a wide selection of comics, action figures, sports cards, sports memorabilia, Lego, die cast toys, vinyl records, retro video games and other pop culture collectibles. The show runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and early admission (9:30 to 10:30 a.m.) is $10.
