One year after a controversial proposal to replace a Pleasant Valley neighbourhood convenience store with three new homes, the old store is still standing

Although residents haven’t been able to pick up bread and milk from the corner property at 69 Autumn Leaf Road for some time, it’s been a while since the site was rezoned in September 2008 from neighbourhood commercial to single detached residential.

While some neighbours looked forward to the local store disappearing and some homes added, others opposed the loss of a community destination and ability to walk to a local store rather than drive outside of the neighbourhood. Some thought three homes was too much for the one lot.

After the property was rezoned, it received approval from the city’s Committee of Adjustment to divide the property into three residential lots.

But several conditions were placed on the consent for conveyance, with a timeline of one year. The only one of eight conditions that was satisfied in the past year was getting the land rezoned.
