Mountain councillors have put off introducing a motion in
support of keeping the ‘Nora Frances Henderson’ name on Concession Street
hospital.
Mountain councillor Scott Duvall said he will wait until the
Nov. 11 council meeting before introducing the motion, which is turning out to
be a contentious issue within the community and among councillors.
“I just want to make sure everything is right,” he said.
Mr. Duvall had indicated he was going to introduce the
motion at the Oct. 28 council meeting. Councillors Tom Jackson and Terry
Whitehead have already thrown their support behind the motion.
The motion stated that the city “provide their full support
for the retention of the name, ‘Nora Frances Henderson’ on the hospital”. The
motion also asks that the Hamilton Health Sciences Board be asked to reconsider
its September 2006 decision to rename the hospital after Margaret and Charles
Juravinski.
One hospital board member, Ancaster councillor Lloyd
Ferguson, has already expressed his uneasiness to the motion.
Board officials have already stated naming the Henderson the
Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre is a way to honour the Juravinskis for
contributing $43 million for projects across the community, including $15
million to support the hospital redevelopment at the Henderson site. The
redevelopment cost has increased to about $259 million.
