A hole was being excavated on East Street North at Cairns Avenue on Nov. 23, one day before work was supposed to be completed on the water main replacement, road and sidewalk reconstruction project between Hunter Street and York Road.
Completion of water main replacement, road and sidewalk reconstruction and traffic calming measures on East Street North, between Hunter Street and York Road, has been delayed by three weeks.
City of Hamilton spokesperson James Berry said the project, which was supposed to be substantially completed by Friday, Nov. 24, is now anticipated to be done and opened to traffic the week of Dec. 11, weather permitting.
“Navigating excavations through the existing underground infrastructure has proven difficult and time consuming,” Berry said. “Inclement weather, including rainfall, has also been a factor in the delay to the project.

Crews were excavating a hole in the intersection of East Street North and Cairns Avenue on the afternoon of Thursday, Nov. 23 — one day before the original substantial completion date.
After replacement of underground infrastructure is completed, remaining work includes reconstruction of the road and sidewalks.
