What preceded the shooting — which happened just steps away from St. Helen’s Site, a former school turned recreation and child-care centre — was an “altercation” between a group of people, said Cont. Krista-Lee Ernst. Ernst couldn’t say what spurred the dispute or how large the group was, but noted some of those involved were on foot while others were in a vehicle.
Police searched an east-end property in connection with the shooting earlier this week, arresting two adults while issuing an arrest warrant for a 15-year-old-boy. Ernst said investigators believe the teenager was the shooter in the incident.
Among the six charges the yet-arrested youth faces are careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and discharge of a firearm with intent, according to police.
Two others from Hamilton, a 35-year-old man and 31-year-old woman, also face a slew of charges, including possession of fentanyl and cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Ernst said the drug charges against the pair materialized after police searched their east-end home. It’s unclear what relationship was between the adults and the teen.
