A golfer tees off at last year’s Golf Fore Refugees event. This year’s fundraising tournament moves to Burlington.
A fundraising golf tournament supporting refugees moves to Burlington this June for its second edition.
Shawn Watts of Toronto’s Weston Park Baptist Church, and co-ordinator of Golf Fore Refugees, said the first tournament last year raised $2,000 for Adam House, a Toronto-based refugee advocacy organization, with 60 golfers participating and approximately 30 sponsors.
“I started last year’s event really without knowing too much about how to host and organize a golf tournament,” Watts stated in an email. “However, I identified a need, which really compelled me with all that has been in the news cycle during the Ukrainian and Middle East clashes.”

He said the event’s planning committee is stronger this year, and golfer registrations are ahead of last year’s pace — with a goal of increasing the number of golfers and more than doubling funds raised.
This year’s event will be played on June 22 at Burlington’s Hidden Lake Golf Club, at 1137 1 Side Rd.
Last year’s tournament was held at Rolling Hills Golf Club in Whitchurch-Stouffville.
Watts said organizers moved the event to Burlington because it is “a better located area to other populated city centres.”

He said the goal this year is for 72 to 80 golfers, and raising at least $7,500 for Adam House and assistance they provide refugees coming to Canada.
Watts said organizers are still looking for a handful of hole sponsors, which includes a tee box sign, advertising space in a tournament score book and a partner’s table during the included lunch.
“If there are any business owners that would like an opportunity to provide us with something to raffle off we would welcome that as well,” Watts said.
