The crew will be filming throughout Dundas on March 6, for a possible Top 12 announcement just over a week later.
There’s no confirmation yet whether the Valley Town has made it, but Barry Forth figures a great turnout for Saturday’s community-wide celebration couldn’t hurt.
Could be a factor “We don’t know for sure if we’re in yet,” Forth said. “This could be a factor.”
Grightmire Arena on Market Street will be the centre of activity, Saturday as the Dundas Minor Hockey Association holds its 2010 Championship Day.
While the full day of on-ice activity takes place, Gotta Be Dundas will hold a number of activities outside the arena.
Forth said a celebrity road hockey game will begin at 11 a. m., featuring Stoney Creek Warriors coach and fomer NHL defenceman Ric Nattress, CHCH-TV personalities Mark Hebscher and Donna Skelly, and several other surprise guests.
“We want everyone to come down,” Forth said. “We want everyone to wear their yellow Gotta Be Dundas jersey.”
While the arena will be a focus of activity, the CBC crew is expected to film in downtown Dundas, and Forth is working with Downtown Dundas BIA chair Phyllis Kraemar to decorate the downtown in a local hockey theme.
Forth figures the day will provide an opportunity for area residents to continue a local celebration of the national pride that reached a fever pitch during last week’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver — culminating with an overtime win for a gold medal in men’s hockey on Sunday.
“Everyone will remember where they were when Crosby scored,” Forth said. “If we are named Hockeyville, everyone in Dundas will remember where they were when it was announced.”
Dundas is currently among the front-runners for the final 12 communities, which will be named during a CBC special on Monday, March 15. From that date until March 21, Canadians will vote for their favourite community. The top five vote getters will be announced on Hockey Night in Canada on March 27, with another round of voting before the winner is announced on April 3 during live HNIC broadcasts from each of the top five communities.
In addition to the title of CBC-Kraft Hockeyville 2010, the winning community will receive $100,000 for arena upgrades and a pre-season NHL game. Each of the other top five communities will receive $25,000 for arena upgrades.
