The Blues’ record after last week’s shootout win and overtime loss was three wins, two losses and three overtime losses. This season mark’s the team’s 50th anniversary.
Last Thursday, the Blues outshot Dunnville 70-17 but ended regulation tied, stymied by a hot goaltender. Dundas goals were scored by Kyle Draper and Kevin Dowling, with assists from Scott Kearsley, Jordan Emick and Brian Buehler.
Dundas took 31 shots on the Dunnville net in the third period, but didn’t score. The home team outshot Dunnville 7-1 in a five-minute overtime, but no goals forced a shootout.
Draper and Emick both scored for Dundas, while goalie Scott Anderson held Dunnville to one shootout goal, finally sealing his first victory in net for the Blues.
“We outplayed Dunnville from the drop of the puck and throughout the entire game but ran into a hot goaltender,” coach Steve Aglor said.
On Friday, the Blues were flat for the first two periods in Caledonia. Nick Bazinet found the net in the first , but the Corvairs took a 2-1 lead into the second period, which went scoreless. The Blues came back strong in the final frame with a power-play goal from Dowling, assisted by Emick and team scoring leader Cole McNeil.
For the second time in two nights, and the third straight game, the Blues went into overtime. Like the night before, they outshot their opponents –this time 34-29 –but it was Caledonia who found the net in overtime for the win.
“Playing with a short bench, especially on defence, really hurt us in the last couple of games,” Aglor said.
Defenceman Andrew Clark was away for the weekend, and Ryan Ashurst has been out a couple of weeks, with probably a couple more weeks to go before he can hit the ice.
One of the team’s top offensive threats, Mike Sicilia, is also out. He’s been held to only three of the team’s eight games so far this season –but has chipped in four assists.
Aglor hopes Sicilia will return to the lineup soon.
“We’ve only played two games this season with our full line-up,” he said. “The players are working hard in practice but it’s tough to get the chemistry we need with the players we’ve had out of the line-up.”
The Blues had games scheduled in Glanbrook, Wednesday, and at home Thursday against Grimsby. The team’s next home game is Thursday, Oct. 30 against the Simcoe Storm.
As of Oct. 22, newcomer Cole McNeil led the Blues with five goals and four assists for nine points. Veteran Kevin Dowling had four goals and two assists, while Brian Buehler, Andrew Clark and Jordan Emick each have one goal and five assists. Veteran Dustin Dzaman has collected three goals and one assist.
