It has been an interesting start for the Dundas Blues Junior C hockey team. After the Blues lost their first two games - both of which they could have won -- Blues head coach Eric Lachance resigned.
This left Blues owner/director of hockey operations Dan Caco and Blues general manager and assistant coach Steve Aglor in a bit of a bind. After some serious thought and lengthy conversations, it was decided that Caco and Aglor would take on the role as co-coaches.
This puts a lot of coaching experience behind the Dundas bench. Caco has coached at many levels, including professional and minor hockey, and won national championships. This is Aglor's 10th year as GM/coach with the Blues.
Dundas won its first game after the coaching change with only one practice headed by the two new bench bosses. Aglor figures a few more good practices will help the players pick up the systems and the Blues will become a tough team to beat.
"This Dundas team has lots of talent and has to be one of the fastest teams in the league," Aglor said. "Right now, it's finding the right chemistry on the lines and everything should be just fine."
The Blues beat the Caledonia Corvairs 5-4 after the coaching change. Jeremy Beresh gave the team a 1- 0 lead after the first period with assists going to Kevin Dowling and Zac Cosentino. Early in the second, Dustin Dzaman put the Blues up by two from Mike Sicilia and Mike Peters. Caledonia then scored twice within 30 seconds to end the period with the teams tied at two goals apiece.
Dundas came out hard again in the third period and scored a couple of quick ones. First it was Cole McNeil from Brian Buehler and Jordan Emick, then Emick, playing his first game of the season, set up Nick Bazinet to give Dundas another two-goal cushion.
The Corvairs came back with a power-play goal to pull within one, then Blues leading scorer McNeil found the back of the Caledonia net after being set up by Buehler.
With two minutes remaining, the Corvairs scored again to come within one. Dundas was handed a penalty in the last minute of the third but held the Corvairs off for their first win of the season. Dundas outshot Caledonia 34-22. Shawn Krzykala got his first Junior win in net. The final period was very costly for the Blues as they lost Sicilia to an injury.
The next night, Dundas dropped a 3-2 game in Dunnville.
The Blues host the Dunnville Terriers next Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
