Growing up in a tough Hamilton neighbourhood, Mickey Dimic was usually the smallest kid in his class.

As a child his parents put him in Judo and karate to help him build strength and confidence. Decades later that commitment is paying off in more ways than one.

Dimic, a two-time World Jiu-Jitsu champion, is now the first-time author of Mixed Martial Arts Unleashed, a new instructional book from international publishing giant McGraw Hill.

A five-time Canadian champion, Dimic is also a member of the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame, along with the likes of Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris.

An Ancaster resident, Dimic opened the Hamilton School of Martial Arts in 1991. He currently oversees about 400 students.

Now he's showing the general public the tricks of the trade with his 230-page paperback instructional book complete with photos and step-by-step instructions.

"They're all the moves I fought and won with," Dimic said. "They're the moves that work."

The book is designed for an audience familiar with the basics of martial arts.

Dimic co-authored the book along with Judo black belt fighter Christopher Miller of Dundas.

Take down your opponent

Throughout the book, you'll find out how to take down your opponent, from the double-leg throw to the headstand sweep. You'll also discover ways to punch and kick with power and precision, a plan to force your opponent into submission and a winning strategy for every fight.

"We got rid of the boring stuff and made it better," Dimic said.

Dimic is also unveiling a new martial arts clothing line called Unleashed.

"I wanted to promote health and fitness for the kids," he explained.

After unsuccessfully pitching the book to several smaller publishers, Dimic took a shot with McGraw Hill. With offices in 12 countries worldwide, McGraw Hill will distribute the book to martial arts enthusiasts around the globe.

Dimic said mixed martial arts, also known as Jiu-Jitsu, is gaining increased fan support in North America, despite the fact fights can't be held legally in Ontario.

"It's because this is real and people like that," Dimic said.

Mixed martial arts combines boxing, Judo, wrestling and kickboxing.

"They think it's too malicious," Dimic said, describing the sport's critics. "But if you have good refs, it's a good sport. They have to stop it when it gets really bad."

Mickey Dimic will attend a book signing this Saturday, Sept. 13 at Chapters in the Ancaster Meadowlands at 737 Golf Links Rd. beginning at 12 noon.

Copies hit bookstands today (Sept. 12).
