I'm sure I'm not the only one who's sick and tired of hearing about poor little Omar Khadr.
Locally, Hamilton East-Stoney Creek MP Wayne Marston has been leading the charge to bring the young Islamic fundamentalist 'home' to Canada.
The entire situation drives me crazy. It's the contradiction and hypocrisy of this case that needs to be exposed.
So who is Omar Khadr? Well, he's the fourth child of the notorious Khadr family who lives in Toronto. He was captured by American forces at the age of 15 following a four-hour firefight with militants in the village of Ayub Kheyl, Afghanistan. He has spent six years in the Guantanamo Bay detention camps charged with war crimes and providing support to terrorism after allegedly throwing a grenade that killed a U.S. soldier.
Omar is a Canadian citizen. The Canadian government has refused to seek extradition or repatriation despite the urging of Amnesty International, UNICEF, the Canadian Bar Association and other prominent organizations.
In Canada, the Khadr family has been vilified since a 2004 CBC documentary revealed ties to Al Qaeda's elite and broadcast comments by Khadr's mother and sister that denounced Canada's 'liberal' society.
For the record, let's look at some members of the Khadr family. Ahmed Said Khadr was Omar's father. Born in Egypt, he moved to Canada in 1977. He was accused of being a "founding member" of Al-Qaeda and financier for the organization. He was put on a list of suspected terrorists after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. He was later killed in a shootout with Pakistani forces near the Afghanistan border.
Following his death, Omar's mother Maha and sister Zaynab (Osama bin Laden attended her wedding) said in an interview with the CBC that Ahmed was proud to die as a shaheed, a martyr, a soldier of Islam.
"We believe dying by the hand of your enemy because you believe in... you're doing it in the way of Allah, that it's the best way to die," said Zaynab. "My father had always wished that he would be killed... he would be killed for the sake of Allah. I remember when we were very young he would say, if you guys love me, pray for me that I get jihaded, which is killed."
Here's a quote from Maha after the Sept.11, 2001 attacks.
"To be honest with you, since I am Palestinian and I know the Americans are helping the Israelis so much, I said let them have it. It's time, it's time," Maha said. "I don't want you to think [I wanted to hurt] innocent people in the building, but I want to hurt that person, whoever gave the order to the Israeli to kill the Palestinian. But you know, innocent people pay the price, even in Afghanistan."
Abdullah Khadr was arrested on behalf of the United States and is pending extradition for selling weapons in Pakistan. Abdulkareem Khadr is a paraplegic following a Pakistani attack that killed his father.
This week, a videotape was released showing Omar Khadr crying to interrogators and begging to come home to Canada.
Prior to his capture, Omar was fighting alongside the ruthless Taliban in Afghanistan. If he was so passionate about living in Canada, what was he doing in Afghanistan? Why was he trying to kill NATO soldiers?
I thought it was a bit ironic to listen to Omar cry about wanting to come home.
"You don't care about me," he cried to CSIS intelligence officers.
Good grief. Talk about a self-centred little brat.
It seems to me that Omar only cares about Canada out of convenience. He was prepared to kill Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan, but now he wants protection.
Let's get one thing straight. Omar Khadr left the freedom of Canada to fight with the Taliban, a terrorist organization.
Many are quick to point out civilian casualties committed by NATO troops, however, when attacking the democratic government of Afghanistan, the Taliban deliberately target and murder civilians.
Terrorize people
They invade villages by night, murder anyone associated with the democratically elected government, burn schools, suppress women, kidnap boys to serve with them and terrorize people into paying illegal "taxes" to support them.
The Taliban are evil and murderous scumbags. In my opinion, anyone who supports the Taliban in Canada should be deported for giving 'aid and comfort to the enemy' -- one of the definitions of treason.
Omar Khadr is being used as a pawn by those who hate the United States and who obviously have no concern for the lives of Canadian soldiers
Let him be judged this fall for his alleged involvement in the death of an American soldier and then, depending on the verdict, we can decide whether to let Omar Khadr back in Canada where he can start hatching his next plan to kill and maim innocent people.
