What started out as a few friends getting together to jam has turned into two albums and three cross-country tours for three Redeemer College grads.

"We started as just a jazz jam band," says Matt McKenna, one-third of Garner, who are getting ready to release Purple on Nov. 28.

But before long, he said, the trio was gelling and decided to get serious.

Mr. McKenna, who plays piano and keyboards and serves as the lead singer, along with James Bloemendal (guitar) and Matt McFarland started to write their own songs — they just needed a name.

"We came up with a bunch of terrible names, but eventually we came up with Garner," says McKenna.

Garner, for the name of the street Redeemer is located on, as well as the fact they would have to garner fans and interest to build their careers.

Mr. McKenna said the band takes a new direction, a mix of funk, rock and pop, with Purple.

Comparisons

"We get the comparisons of Stevie Wonder and Barenaked Ladies with a little John Mayer mixed in," he said.

Garner holds a CD release party Friday, Nov. 28 at 7:30 p. m. at the Westside Concert Theatre, 434 King St. W. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.
